About the Artist


Award-winning artist Sam McDowell has studios in Carmel, California and Bequia, West Indies. A one-time art professor at Princeton, Mr. Mc Dowell was introduced to the art of Scrimshaw by then Senator john F. Kennedy in 1955. Mr. McDowell is widely regarded as among the premier American scrimshanders and folk artist, and is the recipient of the coveted Peabody Fellowship. His work has been exhibited internationally and is found in the finest shops, galleries, and private collections in the world. He personally engraves each knife by hand with illustrations based upon his original designs.
